English

The Department

There are four designated English and media studies classrooms in the school as well as the Succesmaker computer suite. All are bright and colourful and include many examples of pupils’ work. The rooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards which are used every lesson, encouraging the use of ICT within the subject and also providing a more interactive teaching environment for the pupils. The department aims to provide pupils with a relevant and enjoyable learning experience and encourage them to foster a keen interest in both literature and the media.


Teaching Staff

There are six members of staff in the Department:

The Curriculum

Key Stage 3

In Year 7, as well as developing their own writing and speaking and listening skills, pupils study a range of literature and media including Anthony Horowitz’s ‘The Switch’ and Alfred Noyes’ ‘The Highwayman’ as well as non-fiction such as leaflets and newspapers.

In Year 8, pupils develop their study of literature and media with short stories and plays such as Goggle Eyes and begin studying film.

In Year 9, pupils are introduced to Shakespeare through ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and develop their study of the media through analyzing a range of media texts, from film posters to trailers to film extracts.

Key Stage 4 - English

At key stage 4, pupils follow the WJEC specifications for both English and English literature. Written coursework (20%) and speaking and listening activities (20%) are completed in Year 10.  Of Mice and Men; Anita and Me; Blood Brothers; and A View From the Bridge are the texts studied.

Key Stage 4 – Media Studies

At key stage 4, pupils follow the WJEC specifications.  Coursework accounts for 50% of the marks.  Pupils create their own pieces of media, from magazine covers to film trailers, and analyse film extracts.  The examination requires a study of TV programmes and print media.

Key Stage 5 – English

Pupils follow the WJEC specifications. At  AS level, the course comprises of two units(20% of the A level mark) of coursework – one comparison of two texts and one piece of creative writing based on independent reading – and one examination (30% of the A level mark) on the study of two poets.  At A2 level, the course is split into 3 units – 1 examination on Shakespeare and Sophocles and 1 examination on Paradise Lost (30%of the A level mark).  The coursework is a thematic study of three authors (20% of the A level mark)

Key Stage 5 – Media Studies

Pupils follow the WJEC specifications. At  AS level, the course comprises of 1 examination (25% of the A level mark) which requires an analysis of a media text and coursework (25% of the A level mark) which requires the production of a media text – from a magazine to a film trailer – and an evaluation.  At A2, the examination (25% of the A level mark)  will require a study of film, the music industry and advertisements and a coursework project which includes research, production and evaluation(25% of the A level mark).


Extra curricular activities and misc information

The department runs theatre trips regularly to enable pupils to see their set texts performed on stage.

After-school clubs are held twice a week for those seeking extra help with their work.
