A gateway to learning

French

The Department

There are two designated French rooms in the school. Both are bright and colourful and include many examples of pupils’ work. The two rooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards which are used every lesson, encourage the use of ICT within the subject and also provide a more interactive teaching environment for the pupils. The Department aims to provide pupils with a relevant and enjoyable learning experience which may encourage them to continue their study of a foreign language beyond the compulsory requirement, and/or to take up the study of other languages

Teaching Staff

There are two members of staff in the Department. The Acting Head of Department has a full French timetable whereas the second in department has a 50% French timetable.

  • Mrs. D. Hope – Acting Head of French

  • Miss. L. Boyles – French and English teacher

The Curriculum

Key Stage 3

In Key Stage 3, the coursebook Fusée is used. Each pupil is given an exercise booklet to accompany the different units in the book. In Year 7, topics studied are school, describing people, family, friends and pets, and daily routine. In year 8, town and region, school, hobbies, food and clothes. In Year 9, healthy living, leisure activities, holidays, school and family/friends.

Key Stage 4

In Key Stage 4, Fusée is also used as the main text book. Topics already covered in Key Stage 3 are dealt with in more detail and other topics such as the Environment and the World of Work are introduced. Pupils follow the WJEC specifications. In this Key Stage, the written part of the examination is replaced by the written coursework option
Extra curricular activities and misc information
in previous years, the Department has run an educational visit to Normandy every other year. It is hoped that these excursions will resume next year. The French Department has links with CILT Cymru and in January, a representative comes into school from this organization to talk to pupils about Languages and the field of work. Every Wednesday evening, there is a Language Club and on a Monday evening there are extra GCSE classes after school. This year, the Department planned a number of activities for the European Day of Languages – competitions and food tasting being among the most popular.
