Maths

The Department

*     The Mathematics department is housed in a suite of rooms located in the main school building. All teaching rooms have interactive whiteboards which are used as an integral part of lesson delivery and give access to the extensive range of specialized software purchased over recent years.

*  There are six teachers in the department who teach mathematics either full time or as the main part of their teaching commitment.


Teaching Staff

The Mathematics Department is staffed by a team of experienced teachers.

  • Mr P Griffin – Head of Mathematics ( KS3, KS5 )

  • Mrs K Clarke – Acting Head of Sixth Form

  • Ms K Jones – Key Skills Coordinator

  • Mrs M Pearce – Deputy Head

  • Mr J Rugman – Basic Skills Coordinator


The Curriculum.

Key Stage 3

Pupils are taught in sets, common to all subjects, in years 7 and 8 but are set according to mathematical ability in Year 9.

Pupils follow differentiated schemes of work based on the ‘Impact Maths’ scheme throughout year 7, year 8 and for the first term of year 9.

Key Stage 4

The work for KS 4 begins in year 9, after Christmas, and pupils are prepared for the modular GCSE course run by EDEXCEL. According to ability the pupils are entered at either Higher Tier, grades A* to D, or for the Foundation Tier, grades D to G. This work continues throughout years 10 and 11 with modules taken at different occasions throughout this time.

Key Stage 5

Pupils returning to the sixth form to study Mathematics at AS or A2 level follow the WJEC course. This consists of six modules based on ‘Core’ , mechanics and statistics modules. In year 12 the module are C1, C2 and M1 whereas in year 13 the modules are C3, C4 and S1. The school is part of the Cynon valley consortium an classes may have pupils from other schools.

 
Extra curricular activities and misc information.

The department enters pupils for a number of extra curricular activities including competitions, lectures and master classes at different times throughout the school years.
