The Curriculum

 Key Stage 3

At key stage 3 pupils have two hours of lessons per week. In the lessons pupils are introduced to a wide range of activities required by the national curriculum. These include games, gymnastics, adventurous activities, health fitness and well being, athletics and swimming. The main aim of the department is to introduce and develop the skills required for the pupils to be able to take part in all the activities in school and in their local communities. As well as performing pupils will have the opportunity to explore different roles within sport such as leadership, officiating and coaching.

Key Stage 4

At key stage 4 pupils have 1 hour per week. The national curriculum requires pupils to take part in two of the following areas, games, athletics, health fitness and well being, gymnastics and swimming. At Blaengwawr we feel that pupils should have the opportunity to extend their existing knowledge and skills in the activities that they enjoy. We use the local sports centre to deliver the key stage 4 curriculum and we hope that pupils familiarize themselves with the surroundings and use them in their own time.

GCSE

Pupils follow the edexcel examination board specification. Over a two week timetable, pupils have three hours of theory and two hours of practical. At the end year 11 they sit a one and a half hour examination as well as obtaining marks in four practical activities.

Entry Level

This course is designed for pupils who find difficulty with written work. The course is entirely practical with pupils having to obtain six marks for six different activities. At the end of year 11 pupils will be moderated by an external examiner.
